Half term fun in the rain (should read sun)

Updated: Jan 9

Our holiday to Croatia didn't turn out to be the sunshine experience we had in mind.

Our half-term holiday in Croatia was a wet one!

We've just arrived home from our May half-term holiday to Croatia where we stayed at the Valamar Isabella Island Resort. I'd love to say we had the time of our lives. Sadly, it was average. OK, maybe that's a bit harsh. We got to spend a week together as a family doing what the Ruggies do best, playing. No washing, cleaning, cooking or work, just time together. The dampener? The rain.

When we booked our holiday (that I must add cost literally an arm and a leg due to half term rates) we had sun, sea and smiles in mind. The reality. Two days of sunny beach action and five days of rainy 'what can we do' action.

The Croatian dream we'd bought into {TUI image}

We have stayed at the Valamar Isabella Island resort before. Last year in fact (we had wall to wall sunshine). We had such a great time that we wanted to relive the Croatian dream. Maybe this was where we went wrong. Trying to recreate a good memory. Maybe we should have left it at that.

Despite the rain, I would highly recommend the resort. It's fantastic for families. So much to do for adults and children, of all ages. Lots of parks, a magical treehouse, soft play, teen zone, crazy golf, tennis, football, gym, spa and more. Even better, the flight to Croatia is only 1 hour 55 minutes long. The staff were all upbeat during our rainy week and went out of their way to try and make our time here enjoyable. Rainy day activities were put on, balloons and sweets were handed out, and umbrellas could be borrowed.

We don't want to appear ungrateful. But when you spend a lot of money hoping to get time outside with your family, and instead are stuck inside with not much to do, it is a little disheartening.

There have however been many ups: we went to the Aquarium, Jack braved going on the 'big boy' water slide (about 100 times over), Erin got over her fear of swimming, Pete managed a few work-out sessions (more than he'd have time for at home), we experienced the Noddy Train, and I discovered a great bottle of white wine.

We have lovely memories of this resort in Croatia, however maybe next time we'll leave it at that. Time to discover somewhere new.

Hope you had a happy half-term!

Abbie x

P.S most pictures were taken on our 'sunny' days. Jack's lips did turn blue at one point from swimming with a chill in the air ;)
